ChiCom Body Armor is the VC body armor item that can be equipped in your loadout in exchange for a weight penalty. It is the counterpart to the U.S. M69 Flak Vest and behaves the same.

In-Game Function

When equipped, ChiCom Body Armor uses the standard Body Armor damage reduction. Explosive damage is reduced by 30% across all body regions. Shotguns and the QSPR are reduced by 20% on torso hits. All other weapons are reduced by 10% on torso hits.

HISTORY

The name “ChiCom” is a Vietnam War-era shorthand for “Chinese Communist,” often used for equipment associated with China or Chinese-made weapons. In the game, the name points toward the VC/North Vietnamese side's version of body armor rather than a common infantry item.

Body armor was not standard equipment for most VC or North Vietnamese infantry, but protective vests did appear in the war in specialized roles. Sources describe North Vietnamese transport drivers on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, also known as the Trường Sơn route, wearing armor while moving supplies through areas under heavy air attack. For drivers who stayed with trucks instead of marching long distances on foot, heavy protective gear could be more practical than it would be for regular infantry.

The exact origin of this armor is difficult to pin down. A collector source identifies one North Vietnamese Army example from the Ho Chi Minh Trail as Chinese-made, with overlapping metal plates under a cotton cover. Vietnamese sources also describe armored vests used by Trường Sơn drivers, including a preserved 7 kg vest associated with Hero of the People's Armed Forces Đỗ Văn Chiến, while other Vietnamese coverage describes armor and helmets supplied by East Germany. Because of those inconclusive records, it is best to think of ChiCom Body Armor as the game's VC equipment label rather than a fully confirmed standardized historical model name.
