By shortening the barrel and grip while keeping the PP’s basic mechanism and DA/SA trigger system, the PPK offered a practical balance of portability, safety, and shootability for close-range defensive roles. It quickly became a commercial success and saw widespread official use in Germany and elsewhere, particularly among police and government users during the Second World War.
